If you are interested in trivia RichD, this applies to surgeons only and is a remnant of the time when surgeons did not have to attend medical school but became qualified under an apprenticeship system. By not going to medcial school, they were still called Mr. even after "graduation". Female surgeons are called "Mrs." or "Miss" depending on their marital status. This tradition continues only in Britain and the Commonwealth today.
