ALL EIGHT-year-old Markland Moulton wanted for Christmas this year was a cellular phone, a well-decorated Christmas tree, and a visit from Santa Claus on Christmas Eve.
That was two weeks ago.
Today, Markland will be satisfied if he can just begin to walk and talk again.
On December 2, about 6:45 a.m., Markland, while crossing the road with his mother, was hit by a vehicle travelling from Kingston in the vicinity of the Sandy Gully Bridge close to Riverton Meadows. Young Markland sustained serious head injuries, was rushed to the Bustamante Children's Hospital, slipped into a coma, and later regained consciousness.
However, doctors say, his life may never be the same again.
"He cannot sit down by himself, he cannot walk, he can't talk, and his right side... where he sustained the blow... his right hand is hunched up in an awkward position," mother Shirley Harris told The Gleaner.
SADNESS
Markland is a student of Franklin Town Primary where his aunt is a teacher. The school community has been plunged into sadness at the news of young Markland's accident, curdling the good cheer of the traditional season for numerous children.
"He is still doing physiotherapy, and he has to do another catscan soon. The doctors cannot say anything definitive other than that they are waiting to see what will happen...they say his brain may be damaged," she said.
Recalling the incident, she said: "I was crossing the road with Markland when a vehicle coming from Weymouth Drive stopped to allow us to cross (the road). When I looked to my right, I saw a car in front of the van which was slowing down, the van overtook the car, and to avoid the oncoming traffic from Spanish Town swung into the sidewalk, and to avoid hitting me, he swerved from me, and lick my son out of my hand. I was so frightened."
At this point, Ms. Harris' voice begins to crack, her throat hitches, and tears begin to wind twin trails down her cheeks.
"I just don't know what to do right now, I am just praying that he recovers from this... even now, I can't believe this is happening," Ms. Harris said.
The Hunts Bay police are investigating the incident.
"The driver was given a warning, pending the outcome of the investigation. His vehicle was sent to the Examination Depot on Spanish Town Road, and I advised Ms. Harris to get a lawyer. There is nothing more that we can do at this juncture until the investigation is complete," Constable Marcus Graham of the traffic division of the Hunts Bay Police, said.
In the meantime, Markland and his family wait for that rarest of events - a honest-to-goodness Christmas miracle.
This is a double dose of tragedy. Of course, the obvious is the coma, the not so obvious is him, an 8 yr old, wanting a cell phone. Maybe I am too old fashioned, but this precisely the reason why our leaders need to be careful when defining progress in our country. I wish the kid a speedy recovery.
