McKenzie becomes first Jamaican model to shoot American Vogue
Observer Reporter
Friday, December 12, 2003
JAMAICA'S teenage modelling sensation Jaunel McKenzie created history in New York last Friday when she became the first local model to shoot American Vogue. This makes her third Vogue in two weeks, having shot French Vogue the week prior in London and American Teen Vogue earlier last week.
The Pulse model is now set to shoot her most important Vogue feature to date, a second eight - page fashion editorial for American Vogue with Steven Klein, on her birthday, December 15. Her triumph as Jamaica's first American Vogue model tops an incredible year which saw her commence an international modelling career only nine months ago. Pulse models Jaunel and superstar history maker Nadine Willis combined, have been booked and shot for all the major editions of Vogue this year (French, British, Spanish, Japanese, Italian and American).
Together, they have been a virtual tour de force of international modelling, driving a new ascendancy of black models in the world. Just as Willis is the hottest new model in the world, recognised as such by French and British Vogue, British Glamour, Style.com and Models.com and is touted as the replacement for Naomi Campbell by no less a publication than the New York Post, McKenzie has proven that she is the total model as well as the hottest new runway model this year. Together, in their first full season, they have done a staggering 52 shows including McKenzie's 35, the most by a newcomer this year. The shows were also among the most important and included: Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Yves St Laurent, Emmanuel Ungaro, Stella McCartney , Kenneth Cole, Anne Klein, Clemens Riberio (Jaunel) and Bill Blass, Perry Ellis, Miguel Androver, Catherine Malandrino, Frost French and Blaak (Nadine).
Between them, the Jamaicans executed an amazing 8 campaigns: Gucci, Kenneth Cole, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, (Nadine); the Gap, Nike, British Mobile, (Jaunel) and 4 high-end catalogues for Gucci, Kenneth Cole, Dolce & Gabbana and Macy's. Jaunel also did the world's most coveted calendar--Pirelli--for 2004.
