Frist's move came as Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts was lobbying his Democratic colleagues to filibuster the Alito nomination -- an uphill fight, given that none of the chamber's 55 Republicans have opposed his confirmation and three Democrats are on the record supporting it.

"Judge Alito's confirmation would be an ideological coup on the Supreme Court," Kerry said in a written statement.

"We can't afford to see the court's swing vote, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, replaced with a far-right ideologue like Samuel Alito."

SisWHY: Thanks for alerting me to Herbert's column. It is amazing to me how this Bush touts democracy abroad while trying to kill it at home. He seems to think this is some kind of dictatorship and he's the imperial ruler. No doubt there's a lot to hide about Katrina and his intentional or unintentional bungling, but Congress has a right to investigate it and be provided with the requested information.

Now, will the rest of the gutless wonders who call themselves Democrats show some cojones and stop the supreme court from becoming a rubber stamp for George Bush!
