Today, Prime Minister PJ Patterson announced the date of his departure from representational politics.

Standing beneath a massive collage where he was depicted as the contemplative visionary and man of the people, Mr. Patterson, after an hour-long speech, gave the tense Jamaica Conference Centre crowd what they had come for.

As the multitude perched on the edge of their seats during the National Executive Committee meeting, Mr. Patterson announced that he will be giving up the reigns on Saturday, February 25, during a special delegates conference.

This will be a full three weeks after nominations for Peoples National Party (PNP) President close on Friday, February 3.

In anticipation of his departure, and after patting himself on the back for some time, Mr. Patterson gave parting instructions to the four PNP presidential contendersDr. Karl Blythe, Dr. Omar Davies, Dr. Peter Phillips and Portia Simpson-Miller.

He admonished them to ensure the unity of the party even after the race was over, guaranteeing that no schism occurs.
