Errol what the hell are you talking about man ? Are you telling me that unless I go down the list of every white racist bigot who is known to have gotten away with murder and preach about this
first
, I am a hypocrite ? That I am not to have anything to say about Tookie Williams until I do ? Man, have you any idea what I am struggling with under my own roof these days ?
Look here, let me tell you something. The culture of violence and thuggery that the Tookie Williamses of this world have promoted has become a nightmare for the Black community and for the parent of every Black male in their late teens and twenties in this country. We struggle with the attraction to this lifestyle that Snoop Dogg and other millionaire Black celebrities have cultivated in young Black men. So what do you think happens when they all come out of the woodwork talking as if this man cured cancer ?? What is father like myself, the parent of a young Black male who is enamored of thugs like Fifty Cent and Snoop Dogg supposed to do after these assholes come out swinging in defence of the founder of the Crips ? Look, I am here trying to raise a young man whose values are being screwed up by representatives of his own race. By Black people who are telling him that it is OK to be a low achiever, that academic mediocrity is acceptable, that disrespecting women is acceptable, that you should dress, speak and act like the worst stereotypes of Black men of today. And, let me say it again Errol: that violence and thuggery is something that makes you a man and worthy of respect.
That is what Tookie Williams stood for most of his life Errol, and that is why I am so pissed that Black celebrities, knowing what they do know, knowing the influence they wield over young Black males, have chosen this man to make their stand, to make it their crusade. Instead of denouncing the lifestyle he stood for, instead of showing some balls and denouncing the bloodshed that his activities have unleasehd PRIMARILY IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY I MIGHT ADD, and for once, sending a clear message to yoiung men of today that this is wrong and not something to look upon with any respect. That this is what happens when you CHOOSE to live a life of violence.
Look here, I feel no obligation to preach to anybody about racists who killed Black people in the sixties because in 2005, we are dammned well doing a wonderful job of killing off our own, and all without the help of White people. With all due respect, Thomas De La Beckwith is not my problem at the moment, however deserving of attention he is. When my son leaves the house on a weekend, it is not White people that I am worried about. It is the wannabe Tookie Williamses of the world that I worry about. The ones that plan to lead him astray. Or worse, the ones who may shoot him on the streets of Washington DC for his jacket or to establish "street cred". This is the crisis we parents of young Black men face today my friend. This is what I deal with every single day at this stage of my life. This is my reality. I have a VERY personal stake in what this whole episode represents on a larger scale.
Man, don't get me started. Just say thank God that you can be
"never too concerned with Tookie Williams' fate"
, that it is apparently an abstraction to you. I don't have that luxury at this time .
