One of the things that bothers me about how Supreme Court judges are selected these days is that everything seems to hinge on whether they support abortion or not.

Right now, many other provisions of the constitution are under attack and people don't realize how powerful the Supreme Court is. It takes Congess years to pass a law. The Supreme Court can change or defeat a law literally overnight, with a stroke of the pen.

Bush plans to leave us with a hard right leaning court. That's why things like the Patriot Act and today's announcement that he ordered illegal/unconstitutional spying by the NSA on American citizens should bother you. Because it is the Supreme Court where people go for relief from the excesses of government.

Too much time spent arguing about abortion. How about some discussion on where the nominee stands on the the 4th amendment for example. Here it is:

"'The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."
