Came across this in an article about the "cellphone bandit" and her boyfriend David Williams:

"Williams's parents are from Guyana. They married young and moved to the United States as teenagers. They wound up in the Washington area, where Brian and Dave Williams were born 17 months apart. Deo Smith, their mother, said: "Dave was brought up in a household that knew about family values." Their father, Dennis Williams, did not drink, smoke or swear and didn't tolerate dishonesty, Smith said.

The couple divorced when their sons were 5 and 6, but they lived near each other in the Fairfax City area. Williams had worked regularly since age 15 and never had trouble with the law, his mother said.

After graduating from Falls Church High School in 2004, Dave Williams was admitted to Marshall University in West Virginia, but the family couldn't afford the out-of-state tuition. He decided to attend NVCC for two years and then transfer to another Virginia school where he could study engineering.

He was living with his father, an assistant controller at the Lansdowne Resort in Leesburg. As Williams started college, his father came under investigation for embezzling $265,000 from Lansdowne. In March, he pleaded guilty. His attorney said he repaid the money. In September, he was sentenced to eight months in jail.

"I couldn't fathom it. It was so out of his character," Smith said of her ex-husband. "And I personally did not pick up how devastated Dave was."
