Shaming our heroes

Opposition Leader Bruce Golding used his National Heroes Day message to deliver a warning that every breach of basic rights of Jamaicans flies in the face of the national heroes.
Mr. Golding noted that their efforts represent lives of struggle and selfless leadership which have shaped Jamaica's evolution as a people and made them proud inheritors of a rich legacy.
He declared that it is a legacy that all Jamaicans have a duty to protect and uphold.
The Opposition Leader asserted that every abuse or denial of freedom that Jamaicans permit is an insult to the memory of Sam Sharpe and Nanny of the Maroons.
He declared that everything that is done or not done that shackles any Jamaican in poverty constitutes a repudiation of the sacrifices made by Paul Bogle.
Mr. Golding said the failure to put people first through effective representation, strikes a blow at everything that George William Gordon stood for.
He lamented that the fact that many Jamaicans are yet to emancipate themselves from mental slavery leaves Marcus Garvey's mission unfulfilled. {{

And he argued that the failure to use political power won more than 60 years ago to put economic power in the lives of Jamaicans serves as a betrayal to the legacy of Alexander Bustamante and Norman Manley.
He called on Jamaicans in their observance of National Heritage Week to recognize the deficit that must be closed in advancing the work of the National Heroes and bringing progress to all the people of Jamaica.

Dont ignore the progress, says PM
Prime Minister PJ Patterson is urging Jamaicans not to take the progress the country has made for granted.
He exhorted the people of Jamaica not to underestimate the enormous challenges that the country has faced so far.
And he emphasised that Jamaicans should not devalue the efforts to bring the full meaning of independence to the people.
The Prime Minister noted that the forebears and founders of the nation had fewer resources at their disposal.
But he pointed out that they were blessed with an abundance of will and deep abiding faith in the capacity of Jamaicans to be determinants of their destiny.
Mr. Patterson called on Jamaicans to muster this will and deep abiding faith to leap frog our way to prosperity, peace and full freedom.
He said observance of the theme for Heritage Week requires three things of Jamaicans. These are knowledge and respect of, and the building of their heritage.
Against this backdrop Mr. Patterson implored Jamaicans to ponder on how they can create a profound respect for the past and a confident expectation for the future in the local psyche.
He emphasised that this must be done by starting in homes and communities with families and neighbours.
