Sis WHY & AE: Your posts reminded me I wanted to post this article yesterday and forgot. I, for one, was never enthralled by Jamaican maroon culture once I was old enough to learn about their history which, according to this article, is even more horrific towards enslaved Jamaicans than I thought. Isn't it the same mentality that obtains today--Clarence Thomas, for example? Once I got mine, I'll toss the rest of your Black a&^es to the wolves!!

Maroons should apologise
published: Tuesday | October 18, 2005
RECENTLY, THE Voice newspaper reported that some Caucasians in Britain apologised over the horrors of enslaving the African race.
Also, they represented the savagery of slavery by publicly walking around in chains. Hopefully, this dramatisation will lead to a commitment never to return to humans enslaving another human being. In a similar way, the Maroons need to apologise for their role in slavery and in the Paul Bogle-led uprising of 1865.
Professor Gad Heuman of the University of Warwick said in his book The Killing Time: The Morant Bay Rebellion in Jamaica, that for blacks, it was "killing time" (P.143). And his most damning statement of all was:
"But if the soldiers inspired fear among the populace, then the other major group which helped to suppress the rebellion, the Maroons, aroused sheer terror." (P.12
. That the Maroons were worse than the English militia is horrifying because Eyre said the reprisals were "prompt and terrible that it is never likely to be forgotten."
'INDISCRIMINATE SLAUGHTER'
The English public described events in St. Thomas-in-the-East as "indiscriminate slaughter", while a Baptist missionary in a letter dated December 23, 1866 said: "Only reflect on the harrowing fact that 2,400 of the people (this on good authority) have been shot or hung at Morant Bay and in its vicinity; and conceive of the additional number slaughtered by the skirmishers and others in the woods of the interior, said to amount to 1,000 more at least!!!"
A resolution moved by George Stephens and seconded by the general consent of the meeting held at Jubilee Chapel, Morant Bay on July 12, 1866, read as follows: "We have not a single chapel in our midst of worth, or meeting house to assemble in any of great value, as they have all been destroyed." Rev. Edwin Palmer, who witnessed some of the executions, said, during his six months of imprisonment: "Districts once densely popu-lated are now desolate, villages swept clean, townships blotted out. It is stated that from Morant Bay to Monkland, a distance of fourteen miles, including Stoney Gut, York, Middleton, Hillside, Font Hill, Trinity Village, Somerset, &c., there is scarcely a man who has not been catted; and that from Morant Bay to Manchioneal to Portland, there were very few black inhabitants left."
MAROON-INFLICTED TERROR
This was the work of "an infuriated and irresponsible soldiery" and yet Heuman said the terror inflicted by the Maroons was worse. He describes the horror. However, I will quote English churchman, S. Copland, Black and White 62 who said that
the English had promised to the Maroons rewards for every pair of ears produced of African peasants; and they would return with "many sackful of their frightful trophies." Copland also said that it was found that the ears were chiefly taken from the unburied bodies of Africans. Nevertheless, it was a ghastly act.
